What Do I Need ?

First of all you need to estimate how much drinking water you need.

10 Litres per day is enough for 2 people to make hot drinks, and provide cool fresh drinking water, even when the weather is hot. If you want to use the water to wash up, wash vegetables and cook, you will probably need more.

A family of 4 would need 25 Litres per day to make hot drinks, and provide cool fresh drinking water. There will be enough to wash vegetables and cook too.

Maybe your family are heavy water users, and you think you will need more that 25 litres. Our 80L machine will fit the bill, but needs to be sited outside. It has a 17 litre internal tank which can be connected to a tap, either on the side of the machine, or extended into the house, or it can feed a water storage tank.

I decided to install a reduced 'water off grid' system. This gives me all the benefits above, but I keeps the outside taps and toilets on the incoming supply. My washing machine uses 32 litres for an economy wash and about the same for a separate rinse. I've got an 80 litre per day machine, filling a 400 litre water tank, which then feeds the house. There are 2 off us, (and the cats) and with careful water management, it is just enough. To be fair, a100 litre per day machine would be better. Obviously a larger family would need a larger production capacity. 2 x 80 litre or a 250 litre machine would be needed.

So what about going 'water off grid'? You can take the whole house of grid, and feed water from a machine into the household pipe system. This will give you fresh safe water in the kitchen, where the water from the tap can be used to drink, put in the fridge to chill (we always use glass bottles), wash vegetables, wash up and provide water for pets. In the bathroom, cleaning teeth at the sink is safe, and showering in purified water is refreshing without worry. (and your hair feels nicer). If you live remotely and have no water supply, the only down side is using precious generated water to run the washing machine, flush the toilets, and feed the outside taps.

I have made no reference to purchase cost on this page. All that information is available on other pages. Please note that the machines advertised have been chosen as they come from established and trusted suppliers, are good quality, and are the most economical available to run. The running costs of larger machines can be offset by connecting to solar panels.
